Best nightlife clubs in Amsterdam for a local night out

The best nightlife clubs in Amsterdam: Paradiso, Melkweg and RADION for dancing, Canvas and Madam for views, plus late jazz and blues rooms.

A table of small Indonesian dishes seen from above

For a local night out in Amsterdam, our picks start with three clubs: Paradiso in a converted church, Melkweg in a former dairy, and RADION out west for long electronic sessions. Canvas and Madam put a dancefloor high above the city. When the big rooms feel like too much, the late jazz and blues bars (Café Alto, Maloe Melo, Bourbon Street) keep live music going well after midnight.

Which clubs do Amsterdam locals actually go to?

Paradiso and Melkweg are both in the Centrum. Each switches between concerts and club nights. RADION is the outlier: a former dental institute on the western edge of the city, where electronic parties run for hours and the crowd comes for techno.

Paradiso fills a 19th century church, with a main hall ringed by balconies under stained glass and a vaulted ceiling. The small hall upstairs books emerging acts worth catching. The balconies give the best view of the main stage.

Melkweg spreads concerts, club nights and film across several halls, and something is on almost every night. Your act could be on any one of its several stages. The club nights after live shows keep the evening going under one roof.

At RADION, some parties run through the night and into the next day, so turning up in daylight is normal. The building also holds studios and daytime events, and the whole place feels raw and arty. It’s far out west, so sort out the ride home before you set off. Events vary widely.

Where can you dance with a view over Amsterdam?

Two high-up bars turn into dancefloors after dark. Canvas takes the top floor of a former newspaper building in Oost and moves from coffee with a view to a DJ-led party as the night goes on. Across the water in Noord, Madam sits near the top of a tower, with floor to ceiling windows over the whole city and a club that starts later on weekends.

Canvas draws a young, creative crowd from the east side. By day and by night it feels like a different room, so pick your hour by the mood you’re after. Weekend nights get busy. Going up early is easier.

Where can you hear live music late at night in Amsterdam?

After midnight, the smaller rooms take over for live music. Café Alto has jazz every night with no cover. Maloe Melo crams blues and roots bands onto a tiny stage on the edge of the Jordaan, and Bourbon Street keeps blues and soul going into the small hours. For international jazz and serious listening, there’s Bimhuis, by the water in Oost.

At Café Alto the band squeezes into a corner among the drinkers, and the room fills shoulder to shoulder. The real set usually starts late. Come earlier if you want to stand near the musicians, and buy drinks: that’s what keeps entry free.

Maloe Melo is more blues bar than jazz bar. It’s dim, loud and sweaty, and the bands play in the back room for a loyal crowd. It runs late.

Bourbon Street has bands seven nights a week, and musicians often drop in to jam after their own gigs elsewhere. It goes very late, which makes it a strong last stop of the night. Arrive before the cover starts and you get in free.

Bimhuis is a modern black box jutting toward the water. The acoustics are sharp, and the audience listens closely instead of chatting. Name acts sell out, so book those. The late night jam sessions are a cheaper, looser way in.

Where can you get a late cocktail in Amsterdam?

If the night calls for a proper drink instead of a dancefloor, two Centrum cocktail bars keep pouring well past midnight. Door 74, behind an unmarked door and heavy curtains, was one of the city’s original speakeasy-style bars. Flying Dutchmen Cocktails is a small, focused room run by a respected local bartending crew.

Door 74 makes precise classics and house creations in a dim, intimate room that fills fast. Walk-ins rarely get lucky, so reserve ahead. There’s no sign. Look for the plain door and ring.
