A quick lunch means Rotolo for piadina or Sando ie koji for a katsusando. Pizza means Bonci Pizzarium. For a full Roman meal, book Hostaria Dino e Tony or Romané. In the morning, go to Love for croissants. Late at night, Eroi Della Pizza is still open.

Where can I have breakfast before the Vatican Museums?
Love is a bakery-café about 6 minutes on foot from the Vatican Museums, with a wide range of croissants and specialty coffee. The first thing we’d order is the Moon Love: a moon-shaped croissant with coffee in the dough, plus cream and crumble.
Next to the regular counter there are weekly and monthly limited editions, built on whatever the market has at the time. Think a Danish with fresh figs for a few weeks in season, or a savoury pastry with seasonal vegetables. Look at those first.

Where can I grab a quick lunch near the Vatican Museums?
Rotolo, about 5 minutes away, is the nearest and makes piadina from Romagna. Sando ie koji is about 7 minutes away in Prati and revolves around the katsusando, a Japanese cutlet sandwich. Both are casual and cheap. You eat quickly and head back out, which is what you want on a day split between the museums and the rest of the Vatican.
At Rotolo the dough is handmade and thin, and it only goes on the hot plate once you order, so it comes off slightly charred at the edge. We go for the classic filling, squacquerone with prosciutto crudo. Portions are generous for the price.

Sando ie koji is chef Koji Nakai’s small counter. The katsusando is a breaded cutlet between slices of lightly toasted milk bread. There are bento boxes and a few sides too, but people come for the sandwich. If the counter is full, get it wrapped to take away. It holds up fine for a few minutes’ walk.

Where is the best pizza near the Vatican Museums?
Bonci Pizzarium is about 10 minutes’ walk from the Vatican Museums. Gabriele Bonci runs it, and he’s often called “the Michelangelo of pizza”. The pizza is al taglio: baked in large rectangular trays, cut into slices and sold by weight. After an evening visit, Eroi Della Pizza is closer, about 8 minutes, and open late for pizza and fried snacks.
At Bonci the dough is light and airy with a crisp base, and the toppings change with the seasons. Order a supplì di spaghetti as well: a fried ball of pasta, carbonara-style or amatriciana-style, crunchy on the outside with a Roman pasta dish inside.

Hours: Mon–Sun 11:15–22:00
Address: Via della Meloria, 43, 00136 Roma RM, Italia
Eroi Della Pizza is a no-frills counter in Trionfale, often a bit chaotic, and serious about Roman frying. Leave the pizza for later and start with the supplì. They come in a crackling coating. Pull one apart and the mozzarella stretches into long “al telefono” strings.

Eroi Della Pizza
Hours: Mon–Thu 10:30–00:00 · Fri–Sat 10:30–02:00 · Sun 10:30–00:00

Where can I have a sit-down Roman dinner near the Vatican?
We’d pick one of three places. Hostaria Dino e Tony is a Prati trattoria about 7 minutes away, where the owner decides what you eat. Romané, about 12 minutes on foot, does Roman classics in generous portions. Porto Fish & Chips is furthest, about 14 minutes away in Prati, and cooks Roman dishes with seafood. Dino e Tony is closed on Sundays.
The menu is a formality. Dino tells you what you’re having, then brings a long run of starters, three pasta courses and slow-cooked mains. When he offers to order for you, say yes.

Hostaria Dino e Tony
Hours: Mon–Sat 12:30–15:00, 19:30–23:00 · Sun closed
Address: Via Leone IV, 60, 00192 Roma RM, Italia
Romané is a lively, informal trattoria run by Stefano Callegari, who created the trapizzino. The kitchen cooks carbonara, amatriciana and coda alla vaccinara with seasonal ingredients from the market. We skip the carbonara here for the Fettuccine al Tortellino: the classic ravioli filling (mortadella, prosciutto, parmesan) turned into a pasta sauce. It sounds odd. It works very well.

Romané
Hours: Mon–Sun 12:00–00:30
Address: Via Cipro, 106, 00137 Roma RM, Italia
Porto Fish & Chips belongs to a man who spent years in boxing until a trip led him into a small tavern on the Marseille docks. He reopened Porto in Prati in May 2026, with fishing nets, wrought-iron anchors and paper on the tables. The cod is a thick fillet in the house batter, served with cut potatoes and a sweet and sour sauce made in the kitchen. Carbonara here uses swordfish, tuna and salmon. The fish arrives every morning from the auctions at Fiumicino, Anzio and Terracina. Pass on the plain mixed fry and order the Romanità instead: squid, anchovies, artichoke and fried sage. There are eighty seats and a veranda shaded by plants.

Which place near the Vatican Museums fits my visit?
It comes down to the time of day and how long you want to sit. Go to Love in the morning. Rotolo is the closest of all, and Dino e Tony is the closest for a long meal. Late in the evening, head to Eroi Della Pizza. The table gives walking times from the Vatican Museums, so you can plan around your entry slot.
Walking times are approximate, measured from the Vatican Museums. Opening days vary, and some places close on certain days or between lunch and dinner, so check each card before you set off.
