For DJ sets and natural wine, go to Pigneto. San Lorenzo is where students and artists drink beer outdoors. Garbatella has small neighbourhood bars where the crowd drinks outdoors. And the old centre still keeps proper live music.

Is Pigneto the best area for nightlife in Rome?
Pigneto makes the strongest case overall.
Frisson Roma is two places in one concrete room. In the morning it’s a bakery counter with viennoiserie. Come in the evening, though: the lights drop, the custom sound system takes over, and small plates built on produce from local farms arrive with natural wines, some bottled under labels designed by artists.

Retroscena, also in Pigneto, fills the foyer of the Spazio Diamante theatre. Its menu is written like a script and divided into acts. About a third of the sixty-odd bottles come from Lazio grapes such as Cesanese and Bellone. Cocktails are by the Drink Kong team, and from the kitchen come pizzette, pizza tacos and Roman fried snacks. You don’t need a ticket to drink, and tables are far easier to get on nights with no show. The house Rosso del Teatro and Bianco del Teatro come by the glass, and the coasters carry lines about wine from Shakespeare and Goldoni.

Where do young Romans drink in San Lorenzo?
In San Lorenzo, students, artists and neighbourhood regulars drink outside on warm evenings. The anchor is Artisan, a narrow, graffiti-covered room. Its garage doors roll open onto long picnic tables, and plenty of San Lorenzo first dates start at those tables before moving on to dinner nearby.
Artisan Beer Bar rotates its taps through small Italian and European breweries, from fresh IPAs to barrel-aged stouts. If you’re skipping beer, natural wine, Campari soda and gin and tonic are on tap too. Take a picnic table instead of squeezing into the tiny room, and order whatever keg the staff tapped most recently.

Is Garbatella worth the trip for a night out?
Garbatella is worth it if you want a night that feels like a neighbourhood rather than a scene. Both bars are small, and both send their crowd outdoors. Smile Bar looks onto a square facing the old Palladium theatre. Santa Pazienza serves drinks through a window, and on warm nights everyone ends up out on the street.
Smile Bar has a low counter, shiny yellow benches and pink neon. The short cocktail list is built on homemade fruit wines with a nineties spirit. It changes almost daily, depending on what turned up at the market, and the day’s drinks go up on the fridge door. A record player runs all night. The crowd: neighbourhood friends, and restaurant workers off their shifts.

Santa Pazienza is a counter, a few tables and a window that opens onto a car-free stretch of Garbatella. Cold beers, drinks and small plates go out through that window. Take yours outside with everyone else. The little kitchen cooks late, so it covers a bite after a long evening too.

Where to go out in Monti
Cabaret Voltaire Roma, on Via Panisperna, is named after the Zurich cabaret where Dada was born. It’s a gallery first, with exhibitions rotating on the walls, and the wine and cocktails are poured between poetry nights, book presentations, readings and the occasional live set. Event nights fill the room. On a quiet weeknight, it’s more like having a drink in someone’s living room.

Further along the same street, Charity Café is a small jazz and blues club whose owner has kept the same format, with local musicians, for decades. The stage is a few metres from the tables, and each night has its genre: jazz on Thursday and Friday, blues on Wednesday and Saturday. Sets start late. Save it for the end of the evening, not the start. There’s no dress code to worry about.

Where to go out in Rome’s old centre and Trastevere
The poet and musician Enzo Samaritani opened Arciliuto 1967 inside a sixteenth-century palazzo. For decades, Rome came here for poetry set to music and small theatre. Today it’s a cocktail bar with a real kitchen, and the programme moves between jazz, funk and singer-songwriter nights, with the band a step from the tables. Book a table in the ground-floor music salon, not the smaller theatre room. On Mondays there’s an open jam, and musicians drop in.

Milea Art & Food, in Trastevere, doubles as a gallery. A contemporary art dealer hangs the walls and rotates the works the way an exhibition space would. The list runs to around two hundred drinks, classics plus the bar’s own inventions. Regulars order the eggplant parmigiana without reading the menu. Late at night the neighbourhood settles in for one slow drink. If you want to talk drinks with the bartender (often the owner), come in the first hour after opening, when it’s calmest.

Pick one neighbourhood per night instead of crossing the city. Pigneto and Garbatella each give you two stops. Most of these bars open in the early evening and run late, and each card shows the day’s hours.
