Which Wirtshaus near Marienplatz is worth sitting down in?
Nürnberger Bratwurst Glöckl am Dom is the closest, three minutes away by the cathedral, and it grills small Nuremberg sausages over beechwood. Beim Sedlmayr and Ayinger am Platzl are both about six minutes on foot. Sedlmayr cooks unreconstructed Munich food, and Ayinger pours the family brewery’s beers on tap.
At the Glöckl, the sausages are grilled in the open and served six or twelve to a plate with horseradish. Order them with sauerkraut, not potato salad. If the ground floor is packed, ask for the small upstairs room.

Nürnberger Bratwurst Glöckl am Dom
Hours: Mon–Fri 11:00–00:00 · Sat 10:00–00:00 · Sun 11:00–23:00
Address: Frauenplatz 9, 80331 München-Altstadt-Lehel, Germany
Beim Sedlmayr is a small dining room near the market, dark and panelled, with boiled beef, offal and roasts on the menu. Go at lunch, when market traders and office workers fill it. Read the handwritten daily board before the printed menu, because that’s where the morning’s cooking ends up.

Beim Sedlmayr
Hours: Mon–Thu 11:30–23:00 · Fri–Sat 11:30–23:30 · Sun closed
Address: Westenriederstraße 14, 80331 München, Germany
Ayinger am Platzl cooks better than its crowded corner of the old town would suggest. The cheese and cabbage spätzle is made with a sharp mountain cheese, and the cold platter leans on smoked cheese from the Tegernsee valley. Ask your server which tap is the seasonal beer, since that’s the one the brewery is showing off.

Ayinger am Platzl
Hours: Mon–Thu 11:00–23:00 · Fri–Sat 11:00–00:00 · Sun 11:00–23:00
Address: Platzl 1A, 80331 München-Altstadt-Lehel, Germany
Where can I grab a quick bite at the market near Marienplatz?
Viktualienmarkt is five minutes from the square, and two stops there cover a quick bite: Münchner Suppenküche, which ladles soup at a counter, and Schmalznudel - Café Frischhut, which fries pastries on a nearby corner. Neither asks you to sit for long, so both fit easily between sights.
The Suppenküche has a few stools and a pot list that changes with the weather and with what the market itself is selling: stews, broths, curries. Come around midday, when the list is at its fullest.

Münchner Suppenküche
Hours: Mon–Sat 10:00–18:00 · Sun closed
Address: Viktualienmarkt 3, 80331 München-Altstadt-Lehel, Germany
Frischhut has fried the same four pastries since 1973 and never added a fifth. The Schmalznudel is a ring of yeast dough fried in lard until the edge shatters and the middle stays soft. Eat it on the spot, within minutes of frying. And bring cash: the counter is cash only.

Schmalznudel - Café Frischhut
Hours: Mon–Sat 09:00–18:00 · Sun closed
Address: Prälat-Zistl-Straße 8, 80331 München-Altstadt-Lehel, Germany
Where to book a special dinner near Marienplatz?
For an evening worth reserving, we’d pick Alois - Dallmayr Fine Dining, three minutes from the square, or Komu, about seven minutes away. Both cook at fine dining level, and they feel nothing alike. Alois is formal and tied closely to the delicatessen beneath it. Komu is relaxed and worldly, built on long reductions and fermentations.
Alois is upstairs from the city’s oldest delicatessen house, and Rosina Ostler’s tight, produce led menu draws on the shop’s own cheese, coffee and charcuterie. Allow a few minutes to walk through the delicatessen hall downstairs first. Much of the meal starts at those counters.

Alois - Dallmayr Fine Dining
Hours: Mon–Tue closed · Wed–Thu 19:00–00:00 · Fri–Sat 12:30–15:00, 19:00–00:00 · Sun closed
Address: Dienerstraße 14–15, 80331 München-Altstadt-Lehel, Germany
Christoph Kunz opened Komu on his own terms in 2023, after years running one of the city’s best known fine dining rooms. The crowd comes from Munich, not from the hotels. The bar seats face the pass and are released later than the tables, so if the online booking shows the dining room full, phone the restaurant.

Komu
Hours: Mon–Tue closed · Wed 18:30–00:00 · Thu–Sat 12:00–15:00, 18:30–00:00 · Sun closed
Address: Hackenstraße 4, 80331 München, Germany
Where to eat lighter modern Bavarian food near Marienplatz?
Munich cooking has a younger side too, and two places within eight minutes of Marienplatz show it: Schwarzreiter on Maximilianstraße and Xaver’s on Rumfordstraße. The plates are lighter and the technique more modern than in the old guard taverns nearer the square.
Schwarzreiter is split cleanly into a day bar and a restaurant. The kitchen treats regional produce with a light hand, not in the heavy tavern style. Without a booking, the day bar is the easier way in: it takes walk ins and serves a shorter version of the same food.

Schwarzreiter
Hours: Mon–Thu 12:00–23:00 · Fri–Sat 12:00–00:00 · Sun 12:00–23:00
Address: Maximilianstraße 17, 80539 München-Altstadt-Lehel, Germany
Xaver’s puts roast pork on the menu next to spelt pasta and cured fish. Its room mixes the neighbourhood’s design crowd with people who want a proper Sunday roast. The kitchen is proudest of the pretzel breaded chicken, and it sells out on busy evenings, so order it in the first round.

Xaver's
Hours: Mon–Wed 17:00–00:00 · Thu–Sun 12:00–00:00
Address: Rumfordstraße 35, 80469 München, Germany
How far is each restaurant from Marienplatz?
Every place on our list is between three and eight minutes on foot from Marienplatz, so distance matters less than the kind of meal you want. The table below sorts them by walking time and adds the neighbourhood and what each does best. Eight of the nine sit inside the Altstadt itself, and only Xaver’s lies over in the Glockenbachviertel, at the far end of that walking range.
Time of day is the easiest way to use the list. The market counters suit a morning or a midday break between sights. The taverns work for a long lunch or an evening, and the two fine dining rooms need a reservation made ahead. Opening days vary a lot from place to place, so check each card before you set off.
