Giolitti

Giolitti is a gelateria in Rome that also works as a pasticceria, a business with a long history that still sticks to the craft methods it began with. Its gelato is made from natural, high-grade ingredients: fresh milk, fruit that changes with the seasons and pure cocoa. The flavours behind its reputation are the classic creams, with dark chocolate, pistachio and custard at the head of the list, while a range of refined sorbets completes the selection. The shop runs a register and a separate serving counter, and it also offers table service.

Settle up at the till first and only then walk up to the counter to choose, since people who live in Rome treat table service here as the option for tourists. Among the flavours, the one they single out is the Gusto Riso, a rice gelato with whole rice grains left in it. And if whipped cream appeals, a plain request for it is not the way to go: say “Doppia Panna” instead, and a spoonful lines the base of the cone while more crowns the gelato itself.
