Best rooftop bars in Lisbon for river and castle views

Lisbon's best rooftop views: Javá and Park for Tagus sunsets, TOPO and The V for São Jorge castle.

Lisbon’s rooftop views come in two kinds: the river and the castle. For the Tagus at sunset, go to Javá in Cais do Sodré or Park above Bairro Alto. TOPO Martim Moniz faces São Jorge castle straight on, and The V Rooftop Bar near Marquês de Pombal is the quieter castle option. Lost In adds a garden terrace. Sky Bar gives you a dressier view down the avenue.

Which rooftop bar in Lisbon has the best sunset view over the river?

For the Tagus at sunset, we would pick Javá, a rooftop in Cais do Sodré with the river in front and the old city roofs behind. The other classic is Park, on the top deck of a car park above Bairro Alto. From there the view runs over the rooftops to the river and the São Paulo church tower. Watching sunset at Park is a Lisbon rite of passage.

Javá opened in 2021. Its grill turns out Mediterranean plates for sharing, and the wine list goes further than a rooftop needs to. Dogs are welcome at every hour. Book for about an hour before sunset: the terrace turns over then, and that is your chance at a west-facing seat.

At Park, getting there is half the fun. Take the car park lift to the top floor, then look for the last flight of stairs, which most first-timers walk straight past. Up top there are plants, sofas and DJs. Get there well before sunset if you want a spot at the railing.

Where can you see São Jorge castle from a rooftop bar in Lisbon?

Two rooftops look straight at the castle. TOPO Martim Moniz is up above Martim Moniz square with São Jorge in full view across the valley, and the scene gets better once the castle is lit at night. The V Rooftop Bar is on top of a hotel near Marquês de Pombal. From its best edge you get a clean line over the rooftops to the castle.

TOPO draws a young, mixed crowd. Expect cocktails, small plates and DJs on weekend evenings. Aim for dusk, when the castle lights come on. The entrance is hard to spot from the street: go into the shopping centre and take the lift up to the roof.

Address: Centro Comercial, Praça Martim Moniz Piso 6, 1100-341 Lisboa, Portugal

The V is set far enough back from the street that traffic noise never reaches it. Bartender Luís Levy created the cocktails, which lean on white port, Madeira and Portuguese vermouth, and there are sharing plates on the side. Reserve ahead, because walk-ins are often turned away on clear evenings. Ask for the castle side, and order a white port drink rather than a gin and tonic.

Which Lisbon rooftop bars suit a quiet afternoon or a dressier drink?

A rooftop evening doesn’t have to mean a DJ. Lost In, on a terrace just below Príncipe Real, feels like a garden lounge and is easiest to enjoy in the afternoon. For something dressier, Sky Bar sits on top of the Tivoli hotel on Avenida da Liberdade. Its view runs down the avenue to the river, and the crowd dresses for it.

The decor at Lost In runs to draped fabrics, cushions and greenery, set around a sweeping view over the city and river. In the afternoon the terrace is quieter and the view is clearest.

Sky Bar has DJ sets on summer nights, but golden hour shows off the avenue best. Dress a notch smarter than you would for the car park rooftops. Treat it as a place for one good cocktail before dinner, not a whole night.

How do Lisbon’s rooftop bars compare?

Mostly it comes down to what you want to look at and how loud you want the evening to be. Javá, Park, Lost In and Sky Bar all look toward the river; TOPO and The V face the castle. The quieter terraces suit the afternoon, while the DJ rooftops come into their own after dark.

For food, TOPO and The V stick to small and sharing plates, and Lost In works if you want a bite with your drink.

Our advice: pick one rooftop for golden hour and save another for after dark, when the lit castle at TOPO or the music at Park and Javá takes over. Book where you can, especially at Javá and The V. Opening times vary through the week and Park closes early on Sundays, so check each card for hours before you set out.
