Best wine bars in Paris that locals actually choose

Ten Paris wine bars locals love, from natural wine counters in Oberkampf and the 10th to the Marais, Montmartre and Batignolles.

Half of the bars in this guide sit around Oberkampf and the 10th, where natural wine counters fill up with people from the neighbourhood after work. We’ve added a counter in the 7th, a communal table in the Marais, and two neighbourhood favourites further north, in Montmartre and Batignolles.

Where do locals drink natural wine around Oberkampf?

Start at Aux Deux Amis on Rue Oberkampf, where Paris cooks go on their nights off. From there, go to Le 18 Oberkampf if it’s a Wednesday and you want jazz. Otherwise, head to Pétard on Rue Jean-Pierre Timbaud, where the glass list is rewritten every week.

The anchovy toast, oeuf mayo and charcuterie at Aux Deux Amis come out fast and disappear just as fast. The list takes the Loire, Jura and Languedoc seriously. The room fills almost as soon as it opens, so arrive early and ask the server to talk you through the day’s glasses.

Address: 45 Rue Oberkampf, 75011 Paris, Francia

Toni and Josh opened Le 18 Oberkampf in September 2021. Wine is poured at a tasting table, so you can try a few glasses before committing to a bottle. A jazz trio has played every Wednesday since the first month; come late that night and you’ll be standing. It’s also a bottle shop, and whatever you liked will be on the shelf on your way out.

Pétard swaps around twenty wines on its glass list each week. The cellar behind them is split roughly evenly between France and the rest of Europe. Plates are short and priced for value, and after work the regulars treat the room like a shared living room. Skip the names you know. Ask for whatever was opened most recently.

Which wine bars in the 10th and Belleville feel most local?

Two of our favourites sit on and around Rue Sainte-Marthe. Martha Paris is the one for cheese boards and watching the street; Juicy is for skin-contact whites, picked by an owner who has spent more than a decade in the Paris natural wine scene. Further up in Belleville, Bar Floréal pairs wine with a guest chef who changes every month and a proper cultural programme.

Martha Paris is a wine bar and épicerie on a street that still belongs to the people who live there. Order the cheese plate first (it’s generous) and choose the wine to match. Then add the grilled cheese with pastrami or the smoked haddock accras. If the weather’s good, sit outside and let the street set the pace.

Juicy is a cave à manger. The small plates are pitched to the wine, and the selection moves with each week’s deliveries. The house is strongest on orange wines and skin-contact whites, so start with the owner’s current pour by the glass and leave the reds for later.

Juicy Cave à Manger

Hours: Mon–Tue closed · Wed–Sun 19:00–23:30

Address: 14 Rue Jean et Marie Moinon, 75010 Paris, Francia

Bar Floréal is in a building that used to house a photography collective. Coffee comes from the Brûlerie de Belleville, and the natural wines by the glass rotate. People come back for the spritz. When there’s a screening or a market on, the space fills quickly and feels like a different place.

Where can you get a classic glass of wine in the 7th or the Marais?

Go to Au Sauvignon on Rue des Saints-Pères, where open sandwiches on Poilâne bread are served under a ceiling painted with the wine regions of France. In the Marais, Les Amoureuses is the place for natural grower Champagne by the glass.

At Au Sauvignon, stay at the counter rather than taking a table, and order the Poilâne sandwich with the topping the bartender recommends. On the list, the white Burgundy by the glass is where we’d spend our time.

Les Amoureuses has been a Marais aperitif spot for years. Sit at the long table and you’ll probably end up comparing glasses with the person next to you. The grower Champagnes by the glass are some of the best value in the city.

Which neighbourhood wine bars are worth the trip to Montmartre or Batignolles?

Ask Montmartre locals where they drink wine and they’ll point you to Sapajou in the 18th. Over in the 17th, L’Ébéniste du Vin is a natural wine bistro in Batignolles, set in a former cabinetmaker’s workshop, with plats du jour every day and a list that goes deep into the Loire and Jura.

The bottle list at Sapajou rotates constantly. What’s on by the glass follows the owner’s own taste that week. In the warmer months, the terrace is the most atmospheric outdoor drinking in Montmartre away from the tourist-facing places.

L’Ébéniste du Vin looks like it was fitted out by someone who respects the craft. The daily plates come from a kitchen that actually cooks, and the team knows its Loire whites well.

Which Paris wine bar suits your evening?

Pick a neighbourhood first, then think about the evening you want. In the table below, each bar is matched to what it does best, from a proper meal to live music, a seat outside or something unusual in the glass.

Many close on Mondays, so check each card before you set out. Seats are easiest to get at the start of the evening; later, expect to stand or wait.
