Restaurants near the British Museum in London

Eight places to eat within a short walk of London's British Museum, from a cash-only chippy to a Fitzrovia tasting menu and Soho grills.

A meat pie with mash and gravy and a mug of tea

The best food near the British Museum is a short walk away. Nine to fourteen minutes on foot gets you to an old-school chippy frying in beef dripping, a Sicilian dining room on Charlotte Street, a West African tasting menu, a rotisserie chicken worth reserving and a fifteen-seat Turkish kebab counter.

Where can I get a quick, cheap lunch near the British Museum?

For a cheap lunch, walk about eleven minutes to Theobalds Road. The Fryer’s Delight has been frying fish there since 1962, and it is the least fussy place on this list: formica tables, chips cooked in beef dripping, and a lunchtime crowd of barristers from the Inns of Court, couriers and office workers. Bring cash. Nothing else is accepted.

Order the skate wing if it’s on that day. Go easy on extras, too: portions are bigger than they look from behind the counter.

Where to eat close to the museum?

For a sit-down meal without a long walk, Charlotte Street is about nine minutes away and Berners Street, in Fitzrovia, about twelve. Our two picks could hardly be further apart. One is a Sicilian restaurant in a Georgian townhouse, with a bar that works for a single plate. The other is a West African tasting menu that deserves a whole evening.

Norma cooks Sicily through its Arabic and Spanish inheritance. Caponata and arancini share the menu with saffron and preserved lemon, and the pasta con le sarde is the dish to judge the kitchen by. If the dining room is full, the ground-floor bar will seat you with a short menu and an Aperol spritz.

At Akoko, Nigerian and Ghanaian flavour traditions meet British seasonal produce in a tasting menu that makes no effort to simplify itself for a European diner. On a first visit, take the full sequence; the dishes build on each other. Ask the team about the palm oil sourcing and the fermentation. Both sit at the centre of the cooking.

Where to eat in Covent Garden and Seven Dials after the British Museum?

The streets around Seven Dials and Covent Garden, ten to fourteen minutes on foot, give you more choice for a longer meal. All three places here need some planning. The rotisserie chicken has to be reserved in advance, the courtyard terrace fills first in good weather, and the fifteen-seat counter books up months ahead. Sort the booking before your museum day.

Story Cellar is Tom Sellers’ more relaxed restaurant in Neal’s Yard: a narrow, warm room of banquettes, with a carefully chosen French wine list. Come for the rotisserie chicken. It can’t be ordered on the night, so phone ahead to have one set aside for your table. The sauce poured over it at the table is the high point.

Burro is tucked into Floral Court, a quiet courtyard most Covent Garden crowds walk straight past. The room feels part Irish country kitchen, part fifties Italian bistro. Pasta is made fresh daily, so build the meal around the fettuccine with duck and porcini ragu. In warm weather, ask for a terrace table when you book.

Kebab Queen is a basement counter on Mercer Walk, set around the open kitchen. Six or seven courses trace the Turkish kebab tradition from raw kibbeh to slow-cooked lamb, and the chef talks you through each one as it is plated. That’s why the counter seats matter here.

Where to have dinner in Soho after a day at the museum?

Soho is roughly eleven to fourteen minutes’ walk from the museum, and the evening runs latest here. Both our picks cook over fire. One is a Japanese-inspired grill and sushi counter with a vinyl listening bar downstairs. The other is a modern Australian dining room built around a robata grill, set back in a courtyard off Greek Street so the room stays calm while the street outside does not.

Moi opened on Wardour Street in the second half of 2025. It cooks British seasonal produce over a wood-burning hearth, and the menu moves between raw preparations, charcoal-grilled proteins and sushi. Sit at the kitchen counter to watch the fire and hear each course explained. Leave an hour, before or after dinner, for The Listening Room, the hi-fi bar below.

Milk Beach Soho mixes Australian cooking with Southeast Asian and Mediterranean ideas. Think aubergine karaage with mirin glaze and peanut crumb, kingfish crudo and a koji-marinated chicken schnitzel. Order the potatoes early: their miso butter works on everything from the robata. When the weather allows, choose the terrace over the dining room.

Which place near the British Museum suits my plans?

Choose by how much time you have and how far you want to walk. Norma is the closest; Kebab Queen and the chicken at Story Cellar need planning ahead. The table below sums up all eight places, with approximate walking times from the museum.

Book the dinner places in advance, Kebab Queen furthest out, and call Story Cellar ahead if you want the chicken. Several of these restaurants close on Sundays or early in the week, so check each card before you set off. Carry cash for The Fryer’s Delight. Walking times are approximate and measured from the museum.
