Where can you have breakfast in Munich on a Sunday?

On a Sunday morning in Munich, the options are cafés, bakeries and the taverns that run a weekend breakfast. Two of our picks are for pastry and coffee: a small café with a Nordic lean across the river in the Au, and a croissant house in Schwabing. The other two serve a fuller plate of eggs, bread and brunch dishes, for a sit-down breakfast before the rest of the day.

Café Blá seats about twenty on a narrow street in the Au. The menu is short and the brew bar takes coffee seriously. The cardamom buns come out mid morning and go quickly, so get there before noon.

Hours: Mon–Fri 09:00–17:00 · Sat–Sun 10:00–18:00

Address: Lilienstraße 34, 81669 München-Au-Haidhausen, Germany

Orfanos Croissanterie in Schwabing is Greek run. The dough is folded on site, and the fillings go well past chocolate and almond. Pastries are baked in waves through the morning, so the tray keeps changing, and the specialty coffee is roasted to match.

Hours: Mon closed · Tue–Fri 07:00–15:00 · Sat–Sun 08:00–16:00

Address: Mainzer Str, Karl-Theodor-Straße 1 Ecke, 80803 München, Germany

Wirtshaus Hohenwart in Giesing is a neighbourhood tavern that runs a weekend breakfast. Poached eggs and avocado bread sit next to the tavern classics. Breakfast runs late and books out, so reserve for Sunday morning.

Address: Gietlstraße 15, 81541 München-Obergiesing-Fasangarten, Germany

Madam Anna Ekke, in the Glockenbachviertel, leans Spanish and does brunch in the morning, with pancakes and shakshuka. Start with the wrinkled Canary potatoes and house aioli. They’re on the brunch menu as well as the evening one.

Which Munich taverns serve a Sunday lunch?

For a Bavarian Sunday lunch, go to a Wirtshaus. Wirtshaus Eder in the Westend treats Sunday as roast pork day, and Wirtshaus in der Au built its whole identity around the dumpling. Both keep serving through the afternoon and into the evening, so a late lunch is easy at either.

Wirtshaus Eder is a working tavern in a working quarter, and the menu is short. Sunday means roast pork with dumplings and slaw. For vegetarians, the spinach and cheese spätzle is the dish the kitchen actually cares about. Check the guest beer before you settle on the house lager; it changes often.

Hours: Mon closed · Tue–Thu 17:00–00:00 · Fri–Sat 17:00–01:00 · Sun 11:00–22:00

Address: Gollierstraße 83, 80339 München-Schwanthalerhöhe, Germany

Wirtshaus in der Au has fed its riverside quarter since 1901. The kitchen turns out bread, spinach and sweet dessert dumplings. Order a dumpling as your main: it’s portioned as the centre of the plate, and the roast pork gravy is mostly there to go with it. Families, cyclists off the river path and long-time regulars share the room.

Where can you eat on a Sunday evening in Munich?

Sunday evening opens things up beyond the classic tavern. Bodhi in Schwanthalerhöhe cooks vegan food in tavern format. Fink’s in the Glockenbachviertel serves almost nothing but South Tyrolean dumplings. Levante in Schwabing lays out a mezze table. That gives you a meat-free Bavarian dinner, a small wooden room or a long meal with a group.

Where the roast pork would normally go, Bodhi puts a lupin and wild mushroom ragout with a dumpling, and tempeh roulades in dark beer sauce. Stick to the Bavarian dishes and skip the burgers and pasta. The crowd is far from exclusively vegan.

Bodhi

Hours: Mon–Fri 17:00–23:45 · Sat–Sun 12:00–23:45

Address: Ligsalzstraße 23, 80339 München-Schwanthalerhöhe, Germany

Fink’s Südtiroler Knödelküche is tiny, wooden and always full. The spinach, bacon and porcini dumplings come in broth, in butter or on a salad. First time, have them in broth, the way they’re eaten in the valleys they come from.

Fink's Südtiroler Knödelküche

Hours: Mon–Sun 11:30–14:30, 17:30–23:00

Levante is built around the mezze table and assumes several people and a long evening. Make a meal of the cold mezze (hummus and smoked aubergine among them), then share one main, such as the lamb fillet or the pine nut crusted fish, instead of ordering one each.

Do you need to book for Sunday in Munich?

Only a few of these places need planning. Wirtshaus Hohenwart books out for weekend breakfast, so reserve. Fink’s is small and always full, and Levante’s format suits a group, so a table booked in advance makes sense at both. For the rest, a quick call ahead costs nothing.

Plan by time of day: pastry or breakfast in the morning, a tavern at midday, one of the evening kitchens for dinner. The cards show regular Sunday hours. Around Christmas, check the day before, because holiday schedules can differ from a normal week. Our picks are spread across quarters on both sides of the river, so choose one area per meal rather than crossing town between courses.
