Fournos Greek Coffee Bakery is a very small Greek bakery with a coffee counter in Burgwallen Nieuwe Zijde, the older western side of central Amsterdam, and it feels more like a kitchen serving its own neighbourhood than a café. All of the bakes in the display come out of the oven the morning they are sold, and much of that batch has been bought by the afternoon. The coffee follows Greek habits, so the counter makes iced, shaken drinks like the freddo espresso and its cappuccino version instead of the flat white served by so many other cafés. Regulars soon find the owner remembers what they usually have.
Carry cash, because the counter takes no other form of payment. People who live nearby come in the morning, while that day’s baking still fills the display. Pass over the hot coffee and ask for a freddo, since the iced drinks are what the counter is set up to make.
