Winkel 43 is a café on a corner by a square in the Jordaan, and what brings people in is its appeltaart: Dutch-style apple pie cut high and served warm, heaped with whipped cream that has no sugar in it. The room is simple and rarely quiet, and whenever there is a market, the tables carry on outside onto a terrace. Neighbourhood regulars going through the newspaper share the place with travellers who came for that pie alone.
People who live in Amsterdam go on a Monday or a Saturday, when the Noordermarkt is running, and ask for the appeltaart with slagroom on top. Take a table outside so you can look out over the market while you eat.
