Where to eat Tafelspitz in Vienna, and what to pay for it

Where to eat Tafelspitz in Vienna: a Mariahilf Gasthaus in the mid-price band for the dish itself, first-district taverns, and when a grand room is worth more.

For Tafelspitz in Vienna, go to Gastwirtschaft Steman in Mariahilf, a classic Gasthaus in the mid-range (€€) price band. The kitchen serves a good Tafelspitz next to an even better gulasch. For more Viennese beef, try the Gasthäuser of the first district, Pöschl and Wirtshaus Huth, at mid-range prices.

Where do locals eat Tafelspitz in Vienna?

For Tafelspitz, we send people to Gastwirtschaft Steman in Mariahilf, the sixth district. The room feels like a classic Gasthaus without playing at being one. The neighbourhood knows it well. Even so, walking in still feels like a small discovery.

The Wiener Saftgulasch is where this kitchen pulls ahead of everyone else. It cooks for hours, until it turns dark, almost mahogany. But if Tafelspitz is what you came for, order it: the kitchen makes a good one.

Which Gasthäuser in the first district serve classic Viennese beef?

The Innere Stadt still has Gasthäuser that cook Austrian standards for people who come back every week, and nobody has reworked them for tour groups. For Viennese beef we rate two: Gasthaus Pöschl and Wirtshaus Huth. Both sit in the same price band as Steman.

Gasthaus Pöschl has cooked traditional Viennese food for decades. The clientele includes lawyers, delivery drivers and the occasional professor. The better choice here is the Zwiebelrostbraten, roast beef with caramelised onions.

Wirtshaus Huth works as a neighbourhood anchor, feeding the same regulars, and doesn’t try to reinvent the Austrian classics. Go on a Wednesday, when the Saftbraten (a slow-cooked pot roast) is the special and at its best. The wine list stays with producers from Lower Austria and Burgenland.

How much should Tafelspitz cost in Vienna?

The one Tafelspitz on this list, at Steman, sits in the €€ band. The other places here are not Tafelspitz options: they are other beef and Viennese meals at other price levels, from a family-run Schnitzel house to a hotel steakhouse. The table gives the price band and Sunday hours for each.

For a Viennese beef meal in a grander room, Meissl & Schadn is a step up in price, a brasserie on the Ring with high ceilings and dark wood panelling. Its Viennese cooking has outgrown its hotel origins. The Rindsgulasch beats most dedicated gulasch places, and the Fiakerschnitzel is the other dish to order.

The highest band on this list belongs to Dstrikt Steakhouse inside the Ritz-Carlton, which offers a different kind of beef meal. Austrian beef from named producers goes onto a charcoal Josper grill, served in a dark, focused room. Choose the Austrian dry-aged cuts over the imported ones.

At the € end, Schnitzelwirt in Neubau serves pork rather than beef. The same family has run it for decades. The pork Schnitzel, fried in clarified butter, is big enough for two and comes with Erdäpfelsalat dressed in pumpkin-seed oil. Whatever you can’t finish, the staff will wrap. Cash is still the preferred way to pay.

Where can you eat Viennese beef and pork on a Sunday?

Gastwirtschaft Steman is closed on Sundays, so check the Sunday column in the table before you plan the classic midday meal. For beef, Meissl & Schadn and Wirtshaus Huth are both open. For pork, there is a beer garden in the Prater.

The Kolarik family has run Schweizerhaus, a beer garden in the Prater, for a century. Under the chestnut trees it pours Budvar imported directly from the Czech brewery. Share a Stelze between two: the pork knuckle comes out of the oven with crackling skin. Regulars drink from the larger carafe.
