Wine bars in Rome that locals actually drink at

Ten Rome wine bars Romans use: a deep cellar in Prati, natural wine in Pigneto, wine on tap at a market counter, and vinyl with your glass in Borgo Pio.

Expect tight rooms at several of the wine bars below, and food from the counter alongside the wine at many. Our shortlist covers the place Roman sommeliers name for their night off, a deep cellar and a natural wine room in Prati, and natural wine on draft in Pigneto. We also include a market counter that pours wine from the tap by the litre, and a Borgo Pio room where the vinyl sets the pace.

Where do Romans go for a serious glass of wine?

For range and knowledge, start with two enoteche. Ask Roman sommeliers where they drink on a day off and they name Il Goccetto, on Via dei Banchi Vecchi. Il Covino in Prati keeps more than six hundred Italian labels moving through its cellar. Il Goccetto pours by the glass from the day’s list; at il Covino, the staff will steer the pairing.

Il Goccetto occupies a 16th-century building, with dark wood panelling and shelves up to the ceiling that hold over 800 labels. The mood is calm and pays no attention to trends. Skip the printed menu. The blackboard behind the counter lists the day’s wines by the glass, and they change constantly.

A brother and sister run il Covino. Their list focuses on native grape varieties and leans toward organic and natural producers. The food stays deliberately simple (cheese, cured meats, pizza, tartare) so it supports the wine instead of competing with it. The cellar goes deep on Lazio. A bottle from the region is the easy way into something you won’t see at home.

Which wine bars in Rome pour natural wine?

Concreto in Prati and tante care cose in Pigneto both come from chefs who moved to simpler formats and now pour natural wine with small plates. Vino e vinili, between Campo de’ Fiori and Piazza Navona, combines organic and natural wines with a bottle shop and crates of records.

At Concreto, Enrico Camponeschi swapped the stove for a cold kitchen. His room is 50 square metres, and he matches natural Italian wines with market-led dishes. The selection turns over so often that the list is only a starting point. Ask what’s open that evening.

At tante care cose, the natural wine comes on draft. The food is closer to a Spanish tapas counter than a Roman aperitivo, with homemade fermented preparations and small plates. On the short menu, the ferments rotate fastest. The crowd makes an evening of a few rounds of wine, not a full dinner, and we’d do the same.

Guests at Vino e vinili pull records from the crates and play them while they drink. Most of the small-producer wines come by the glass or to take home, and since the place doubles as a bottle shop, you can leave with a natural wine for later. Some nights, the stools fill for live music and readings.

Where can you drink wine on tap like a Roman?

Box 7 - Vinarius is the counter for this: a market wine bar that fills bottles from the tap and prices wine by the litre. Vetro in Della Vittoria is a related stop, keeping sfuso (loose wine) going alongside artisanal wine with a Mediterranean bias, in what used to be the neighbourhood grocery.

At Box 7, bottles are filled straight from the tap, and regulars barely have to order before the pour starts. At lunch the market crowd takes over the stools. Do as they do and order by the litre.

The old Panetteria sign is still bolted above the door at Vetro, left from the years when local kids came here for pizza bianca. The room reopened in June 2026, and Gianmarco Diorio and Teodoro Giambanco, who also run a beach kiosk at Fregene, pour the wine. From the counter, have vitello tonnato, eggs with mayonnaise or torta rustica with your sfuso. There are only a handful of seats, and in the evening they go fast.

Which Rome wine bars work for a relaxed evening out?

For a glass that turns into a whole evening, three places suit a slower pace. Ai Tre Scalini is Monti’s default wine stop before or after dinner. At Vinificio on Piazza dell’Emporio, the focus stays on wine and good company. 33 Giri in Borgo Pio serves natural wine and bites timed to the records, played on a high-fidelity sound system.

Locals and visitors share the room at Ai Tre Scalini, over wine or a craft beer such as Menabrea. It works for a glass before dinner and just as well for a nightcap. The neighbourhood already drinks here.

Wine is the whole point at Vinificio. Order by the glass and pick something you’ve never tried. Start with an aperitif, and the lively room makes it easy to stay longer.

33 Giri has around forty seats and a DJ choosing from more than 2,500 records, played only on vinyl. Nobody turns the music down. The natural wines and small bites follow the selection, so book ahead and come for the records first.

Which Rome wine bar should you pick?

Pick by what you want in the glass and the kind of room you’re after. Prati and Della Vittoria cover a deep cellar, natural wine and sfuso. Via dei Banchi Vecchi has the classic enoteca, and the streets near Campo de’ Fiori have the enoteca with crates of vinyl. Pigneto is the natural wine detour. Book Borgo Pio for a night built around music.

Vetro seats only a handful, so get there close to the 18:00 opening. Book 33 Giri before you set out. Some close on Sunday or Monday, so check each card before planning a route. A market lunch at Box 7 and an evening somewhere else spread the drinking sensibly across the day.
